Wind power

Hydro Tasmania has been developing wind farms since 1996, commissioning its first 750 kW in 1998 - the King Island Huxley Hill Wind Farm.

Huxley Hill is a test bed for innovation and development combining new technology with the wind resources of King Island to reduce the island’s consumption of diesel fuel. The wind turbine capacity is now 2.5 MW, producing 45 per cent of the island’s electricity needs in combination with other technologies supporting renewable energy, such as resistor banks. More information on the proposed developments can be found in Towards a sustainable, renewable energy future (PDF 225 KB).

Hydro Tasmania also developed the 140 MW Woolnorth wind farm in north-west Tasmania. Renamed Studland Bay, the wind farm was the foundation of a 50/50 joint venture formed with CLP Group in 2005 through Roaring 40s Renewable Energy Pty Ltd.
