Rehabilitation of Disturbed Sites

In the past, construction of dams and associated infrastructure resulted in areas of disturbed ground and many areas that required active rehabilitation. Hydro Tasmania invested significant funds in a land rehabilitation program during 1997-98. The works involved rehabilitating sites within the Derwent Catchment that had been damaged by past Hydro Tasmania operations, including some sites on non-Hydro Tasmania land.

The rehabilitation program now consists of an ongoing review of past land rehabilitation and specific projects to ensure the continued success of the rehabilitation efforts.

In 2005/06 a project was to follow-up fertiliser application on some sites where new vegetation growth had been slow due to lack of nutrients. The increase in vegetation cover on these sites will lead to reduced risk of erosion.  Find out more in our stories.

Hydro Tasmania also has procedures in place to ensure that rehabilitation is considered and factored in during the planning phase for any new work.
